Twikini – Best Windows Mobile Twitter I’ve seen

June 8, 2009

I’ve recently landed in the world of Twitter, mainly because I was interested in reading the Wittertainment posts from Dr Kermode and Dr Mayo, and also in Stephen Fry’s twittering, which everyone seems to talk about. I’m not personally that into the idea of posting my thoughts every 10 minutes, which is why my status updates on Facebook are fairly limited. However, I’d heard that you could incorporate any Twitter updates into Facebook, and make very simple twitter posts from your phone, so theoretically it would actually save me time. And give me something more exciting to do with my HTC Touch HD.

I did a bit of searching through the entries and threads on XDA’s excellent forums specifically for the Touch HD, and came across Twikini, which had quite a few good comments against it. I downloaded a trial version and found it to be an excellent finger-friendly little application for my phone. It can be set up to automatically download updatesn on periodic basis of your choosing, or to be manually controlled. I’d recommend it to people – but obviously welcome any comments from people who have seen any better applications for their Windows mobile, or any comments on Twikini itself.

The first in VR?

April 13, 2008

So I was faffing briefly this morning in a typical weekend activity… popping on my PC on the way to the bathroom, and ending up spending ages on there. Well actually, I spent most of the time on there playing “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfighter” – which is, by the way, the most awesome game I’ve ever played – I’m currently about halfway through ‘Veteran’ mode which, for me, is pretty impressive.  I know Sam got this far within the first 2 hours of gameplay, but for someone who can walk on water, anything is possible.

Vuzix VR920 HeadsetAnyway, I ended up exploring Firebox which is the ideal location for general gadget stuff. And I found a pretty impressive piece of gadgetry, which seems to be the first consumer-available VR headset – the Vuzix  VR920. It effectively presents your eyes with a glorious 62″ TV image (though a resolution of 640×480 seems pretty low for any games) and includes an accelerometer… which means if you turn your head in real life, you also turn your head within the game. Its obviously only compatible with certain games, but it still seems pretty cool. However, its very disappointing that this, the most expensive of the versions of headset, can’t do standard output from iPods, DVD players, etc, as standard – they seem to be able to fleece you because each headset can only do one of a number of things. These gadgets have been available for a while if you’re simply interested in having a personal full cinema experience, but something that starts becoming actual VR is a big step forward.

Anyway at £250 it’s a bit step but its the sort of thing that I’d love to try out at some shop somewhere to see if its really any good. I suspect there’s a few years of development still left in this sort of thing, but its a promising move forwards – VR is definitely the next big step in computer games following photo-realistic graphics (which is pretty much with us if you have a powerful enough PC).

The all new DHodgkinson.co.uk

April 7, 2008

OK so it has basically been a geological age since I had any sort of website, and I have eventually given up on the pointlessness of trying to design my own blog – since it takes too long and never looks as good as these free ones. Well actually, the minute my good friend Sam Huggill decided that a WordPress.com hosted blog was good enough for him, I thought that I deserved no better. So here we are!

I’ll be doing my best to update this on a fairly regular basis, but don’t be surprised if fairly random stuff appears at fairly random intervals. But I do hope that it provides some interest to someone at some point in some way – if not, then it is entirely an egotistical exercise, for which I apologise in advance.

Bye for now.
